Abstract

This study is to know what moral values found in western and Indonesian traditional stories. Whether, the moral values found by researcher then were compared to know the moral values are appropriate to Indonesian culture. The different culture of both western and Indonesia become the researcher’s reason to compare the moral values of traditional stories come from both regions. In order to answer the questions, the researcher takes the study in descriptive-qualitative to analyzing the moral values in western and Indonesian traditional stories then analyzing the similarities and the different aspects of both western and Indonesian traditional stories. The chosen traditional stories from western are: Cinderella, Rapunzel (Tangled), Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, The Frog King or Iron Henry. The chosen traditional stories from Indonesia are: Timun Emas, Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah, Malin Kundang, Jaka Tarub and the Beautiful Fairy, Dayang Sumbi and Sangkuriang, Mouse Deer and Tiger. After analyzing the obtained data, the researcher finds some moral values such as obeying parents in Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Timun Emas, Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah, and Malin Kundang. Helping each other is found in Rapunzel (Tangled) and Snow White. The next is envy feeling that is found in Cinderella, Snow White, Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah. Patient is found in Cinderella, Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah, Malin Kundang. Being arrogant is found in Dayang Sumbi and Sangkuriang. Besides, being fair is found in Sleeping Beauty. In this research, bravery is also found in Sleeping Beauty and Timun Emas. Keeping promise is found in Rapunzel (Tangled) and The Frog King or Iron Henry. Preserving mandate is found in Jaka Tarub and the Beautiful Fairy, and the important of learning is found in Timun Emas and Mouse Deer and Tiger. Based on the findings, there are some cultures inserted in western traditional stories are not appropriate with the culture of Indonesia. From this research, the researcher recommends that it is better if worksheets used at school are selected more to be used for reading texts and it is better to choose traditional stories from Indonesia, in this way parents could build reading habits by traditional stories and make children learn about moral values which are shared in those traditional stories, besides develop their imagination and creativity.
