Abstract

Reading is the most important skill in the classroom because it needs as a primary indicator for students’ skills. Reading has several benefits, including the ability to improve vocabulary and understand in several cultures. The purpose of this research was to determine the significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between students who are taught using PQRST strategy and students who are taught using Scanning strategy. This study was used a quasi-experimental method. The population of this research was students of eleventh grade at MAN 2 Nganjuk. The sample was chosen from two classes, XI IPS 2 as experimental class consist of 34 students and XI IPS 3 as control class consist of 33 students. PQRST strategy was used in teaching experimental class, while the Scanning strategy was used in teaching control class. To collect the data, the researcher was applied pre-test and post-test. The result of the test was analyzed using ANCOVA through SPSS 25. After analyzing the data, the result of this research showed the data was normally distributed. The significant value of Kolmogrov-Smirnov was .141 > 0.05 for pre-test experimental, .190 > 0.05 for pre-test control, .122 > 0.05 for post-test experimental, and .136 > 0.05 for post-test control. The result of Levene's Test was .628 > 0.05, showed that the experimental class and control class was homogeneous. And then, the significant value of homogeneity regression showed .135 > 0.05. As the result above, it means that there is no interaction between covariate and independent variables. The last assumption is ANCOVA. The result of the significant value was 0.072 > 0.05. It was showed that H0 was accepted and Ha was rejected. Based on the result above, the researcher concluded that PQRST strategy is not effective on students’ reading comprehension.
