Abstract

Illocution acts which are called the acts of doing something play an important role in a sentence or a conversation. Because illocution is not merely inform the content explicitly or implicitly from a speeh, but it also reveals the power of illocution. The objective of this study is to reveal the illocutions of interrogatives in The Hound of the Baskervilles on novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This novel is published on 1902 in Devon in England’s west. This study describes the types of illocutionary acts used interrogatives sentences in The Hound of The Baskervilles on novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This study involves the types of illocutionary acts used to interrogatives sentences. In this case the researcher uses interrogatives sentences in novel. The interrogatives sentences were then analyzed and interpreted descriptively based on Searle’s speech acts theory especially on the types of illocutionary acts used by interrogatives sentences in novel. This research reveals that interrogatives sentences used four types of illocutionary acts. They are directive, representative, commissive, and expressive act. The type of illocutionary acts mostly used by interrogative sentences in The Hound of The Baskervilles on novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is directives. Then, directive illocution is decided into directive requesting, questioning, ordering, and suggesting. There are 4 interrogative sentences mean directive requesting, 126 interrogative sentences mean directive questioning, 19 interrogative sentences mean directive ordering and 22 interrogative sentences mean directive suggesting. Besides that, there are only 8 interrogative sentences mean offering as commisive. Representative Illocution is also found in the novel, such as affirming, concluding, and predicting; 17 interrogative sentences mean representative affirming, 35 interrogative sentences mean representative concluding, and 47 interrogative sentences mean representative predicting. The last illocution is expressive. There is only one kind, criticize with 34 sentences. Based on the result researcher conclude this novel used four types illocution.
