Abstract

The title of the research is “Teaching Reading Using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition to Second Grade Students of MAN PRAMBON in Academic Year 2012/2013”. This objective of the study is to know whether teaching reading using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition to second grade students of MAN PRAMBON is effective. In order to achieve the objective of study, the writer designs an experimental research. Subject of the research is the students at second grade in MAN PRAMBON in the second semester in the academic year 2012/2013 that consist of 180 student. To take the sample the researcher using quasi-experimental, so the subject are divided in two class. XI IPA 1 as experimental group and XI IPA 2 as control group. The experimental group will be taught by using CIRC, and the control group will be taught without using CIRC. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test from the experimental group and control group. The result of the tests was analyzed by using t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, the value of the t-table with degree of freedom (df) 46 at alpha 5% was 1,68. The result of the t-test value of pre test was 1,19 being compared with t-table, the the t-test is lower than t-table (1,19<1,68). It show that the nol hypothesis can not be rejected. It mean that experimental and control group was equal. And than the result of the t-test value of postest was 3,36 being compared with t-table, in the result of the t-test is higher than t-table (3,36>1,68). It means we have enough evidence to reject the nol hypothesis (Ho). So, in here the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accept. Based on the result of the test, the researcher concluded that the test was statistically significant. It mean that teaching reading using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition to second grade students of MAN PRAMBON is effective. The researcher would like to suggest to the teacher and the students. For the English teacher is advisable to use CIRC technique to improve the students reading comprehension. Then the teacher should have an ability to increase the students’ motivation in teaching and learning in English and also the teacher should give more attention to the students about their difference ability and attitude. And for the students, they must have motivation and self confidence so that they can ask many questions to their teacher when the teaching and learning process is running. Furthermore, the students must pay much attention to the explanation of the teacher in order to understand the material well.
