Abstract

Writing is generally considered as one of the English skills that is difficult to master by second language learners. Learners commit errors when they practice writing as the evidence of the process of acquiring the new language. The process of students in acquiring the second language is discussed in second language acquisition which involves students’ development to minimalize the errors occur in their writing. Teachers can examine students’ competence in writing by knowing the errors and how students minimalize the errors so that they can evaluate their teaching writing strategies. By this reason, the writer was intended to conduct the study about error analysis that purposed to explore the development of students’ writing of English Department Students of IAIN Kediri in the third semester during a semester. This is a descriptive qualitative study that employed 10 students as the participants. The writing products chosen to be the object of this study were four essays that were collected from each participant. By using the linguistic approach proposed by Hoff, the writer limited the analysis process to see the students’ linguistic development in writing. The writer also used linguistic taxonomy category by Dulay, et. al to analyze the errors committed by students in writing based on the linguistic component they used. Based on the analysis of errors, the writer explored the development of students’ writing by observing the performance of errors in every essay written by students to identify the development pattern of students’ writing. The final result showed that students made errors in three linguistic components; those were morphological error, syntactical error, lexico-semantical error. The writer found out the pattern of students’ writing development based on the error in linguistic categories and the pattern of development in all categories. Every student had different variety of development pattern. The students’ writing development patterns were divided into three. Firstly, the development of students whose errors in the essays were decreased was experienced by 3 students. Secondly, the development of students whose errors in the essays were inconsistently decreased and increased was committed by 5 students. Lastly, there were 2 students contributed to the development of students whose errors in the essays were increased. In this case, this study was expected to help students evaluating their writing progress and also to give the teacher insight of what their students need to improve their writing.
