Abstract

Foreign language learning motivation has traditionally been studied by looking at factors that have a positive effect on motivation. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the factors that negatively influence motivation, it is discouraging factor. This thesis answers these questions: 1) what factors discouraging students in learning English? 2) what types of frequency and priority of these factors? This research is descriptive qualitative. The research design in this study was to describe in detail the dominant factors that discourage English students at six semester. The data were collected from 80 selected students. To get the data, the researcher developed observation by using 15 questions in a questionnaire to gather information about the factors discouraging students in learning English. Description and identification of the data were applied for data analysis. The result of discouraging factors that affects the learning motivation of the English language learners were divided into five themes: teacher, motivation, learner characteristics, school facilities, and the learner’s negative attitude towards the English language. Based on the data analysis, the teacher is the first source of discouraging factors and the reasons are related to teaching method (75%), lack of competence (62,5%), and personality (37,5%). Motivation is the second factor and the reason is the lack of motivation from parents (56%). Learner characteristics is the third factor and the reason are related to lack of vocabulary mastery (67,5%) and character of students (40%). School facility is the fourth factor and the reasons are related to learning material (56%), schedule (50%) and classroom condition (37,5%). The last factor is the learners’ attitude toward English language lesson (37,5%).
