Abstract

Personality traits are believed in influencing the result of students’ language performance along with their engagement and their self–directed learning . based on the reason above. This research is aimed to figure out the direct and indirect effect on students’ English achievement through personality traits, students’ engagement and self – directed learning as the mediating variable This research applies a quantitative research methodology using a mediating path analysis model to figure out the direct and direct influence among variables. There are four instruments in this research in the form of questionnaires and test. Questionnaire of personality traits dimension is adopted and adapted from IPIP POOL, engagement questionnaire is adopted from Phyllis Blumenfeld and Jennifer Fredricks, and the self – directed learning questionnaire is adopted from Williamson. The test is developed by researcher and validated by the expert in this field. There are 100 participants of seventh grader of MTsN 10 Nganjuk. For analysing direct and indirect contribution, the researcher uses MSI (Method of successive interval), IBM SPSS 21, and SPSS AMOS 21. The result of this research shows that only neuroticism and extraversion in personality traits dimension have direct contribution towards SDL with p value lower than ,05 and the critical ratio higher than 1,96 at 5% significant , meanwhile students’ engagement has direct contribution on SDL with p value lower than ,05 and the critical ratio higher than 1,96 at 5% significant . In term of the direct contribution to students' English achievement, only neuroticism which has direct contribution, meanwhile for the other variable; engagement , and self – directed learning has no contribution towards students’ English achievement. Since there is no direct contribution on SDL as mediating variable towards English achievement, the calculation of the indirect effect could not be done.
