Abstract

News takes a crucial part in human life. It has an invisible power to persuade readers and influence their mind and perspective. Recently, there was a big turmoil happened in Indonesia which caused a huge rally. This turmoil was caused by the governor of Jakarta which he gave a speech in front of fisherman on The Thousands Island. He cited the verse of Quran and caused a big turbulence. Furthermore, the critical discourse analysis is considerably to be the most appropriate theory to examine this case. Critical discourse analysis studies and explains discourse in terms of its social and political contexts, it links a cognitive interface between discourse and society. In doing this research, the researcher chooses The New York Times and The Jakarta Post as the objects. The researcher wants to know what types of critical discourse analysis used by both of the newspapers in reporting Ahok’s blasphemy allegation. Later, the researcher also analyses the similarities and differences between them. The amount of the object is 3 from each. It is analyzed by sociocognitive theory proposed by Van Dijk. This research, uses qualitative research as the research design and acquires the data from online sources. The object is limited during November until December 2016 with topic Ahok’s blasphemy allegation and the rally happened in Jakarta on December 2016. This study uses coding to classify the objects and inputs it in each component of critical discourse analysis. The finding revealed that critical discourse analysis used by The New York Times and The Jakarta post are cognitive component, social component, and discourse component. They have the similar order of the most used critical discourse analysis component, cognitive component, followed by discourse component, and the last is social component, the same goes for The Jakarta Post. The differences between the them are The New York time uses cognitive component 5 times often than The Jakarta Post. Same goes for the discourse component. The New York times uses this component 20 times, and The Jakarta Post only a half of it. The last is the social component, The Jakarta Post has a bigger frequency rather than The New York Times. The Jakarta Post uses it 5 times, and The New York times uses it only once.
