Abstract

This research is aimed to investigate the speech act in posts and comments used by members of English Youth Community on facebook and to know types of speech act, the function and the most commonly used in the posts and comments on facebook. The research design of this study is qualitative method. The purpose of this method to know the types of speech act, the function and the most cummonly used on facebook by members of English Youth Community. Therefore, the researcher will give description deeply about the analysis of speech acts that used in posts and comments by members of English Youth Community which are focused on discourse analysis study. The participants are chosen by members who join in this group. The data was collected from facebook that are used by members of English Youth Community Group. To analysis this data, the researcher used Austin’s theory in speech act on posts and comments that used by members of English Youth Community on facebook. The result of the research are. First, the researcher found 5 types in speech act. These are verdictives, exsercitives, commissives, behabitives and expositives. Second, the researcher found there are many of posts and comments on facebook group, but the researcher just took 30 items from this posts and comments. After the researcher analysis all of the data, she found 42 categories of speech act in posts and comments on facebook. While the researcher analysis the function she found 11 functions of speech act categories. These are delivering a finding, offering something, giving decision, commit, giving one’s word, showing gratitude, apologizing, greeting, giving information, argument and clarifying. Third, the researcher found the most commonly used by members of English Youth Community is expositives. The researcher offers some suggestions for English learners to study about speech act analysis from the other sources. Moreover, it is recommended for lecturer to apply this speech act analysis in learning English. It is also suggested to the researcher to do the research in the same field by using different object such as bbm, whatsApp or the other social networking sites.
