Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using board game in teaching speaking for the eleventh grade students of MAN Purwoasri. Teaching speaking is important for senior high school to face globalization era in which communication takes an important role in world communication. To master one of element English, speaking skill, it is needed a media. In this research, the media which is used is board game. Board game is one kind of game which uses a group, “board dice game” is technique of teaching activity in which students as center. This game is like playing snake ladder, but each column consists of one phrase or one sentence which talks about opinion. The purpose of this game is to make students explore their ideas. Hence, the students will force themselves to speak up. The research design used this study is quasi experimental, by comparing two groups of the study, experimental group and control group which in every group consist of 36 students. The experimental group was taught by using board game, and the control group was taught conventionally. Before and after doing treatment, the researcher gave test to the students in both groups, those are pre-test and post-test. The result of the test was analyzed by ANCOVA through SPSS 16. The result of pre-test shows the mean score of the experimental group is 66.17 while in the control group is 61.87. In the result of post-test, the mean score of experimental group is 74.22, while control group is 66.11. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significance at (p) .000 < 0.05 level. Since the significance value was smaller than 0.05 statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, then the alternative hypothesis was received. It means that the students’ who were taught by using Board Game got significantly better speaking skill than the students who are not taught by Board Gam. Based on the result of the test, the researcher concludes that using Board Game in teaching speaking for the eleventh grade students of MAN Purwoasri is effective.
