Abstract

Speaking is known as a productive verbal skill among four language skills that play an important role in interactions that use communication in human life. Speaking ability is basically an important process in learning languages. Learning to speak can be done in class or outside the classroom. Researchers found that many students who learned speaking have difficulty there is no method that helps their learning process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of story mapping technique in teaching the second-graders speaking skill at MTsN 3 kota kediri. This research uses a quasi-experimental design with the treatment held in four meetings, 8 x 40 minutes for each class. This design uses a pre-test posttest to determine students' speaking skills before treatment and after treatment. The population of this research is the students of class VIII MTsN 3 Kota Kediri. Samples were taken two classes, one class as an experimental class was class VIII A consisting of 34 students and the other class as a control class was class VIII B consisting of 34 students. In collecting data, researchers used instruments in pretest and post-test. Test instruments speak in oral form. After giving a post-test, the researchers then analyzed the data using SPSS 16.0. The results of this research used ANCOVA, because the result of KolmogorovSminorv analysis on the pretest and posttest is normal. The Levene's Test shows that the experimental and control group has the same ability. The result is p (0.836)> α (0.05). Then, the homogeneity regression shows that p (0.093)> α (0.05). Means there is no interaction between covariate and independent variables. The last assumption is the output of ANCOVA showed that the significant value was p (0.000) <α (0.05). it means that there is enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and accepted the alternative hypothesis. Based on the findings above, the researcher concludes that Story Mapping Technique is an effective teaching technique to improve the students' speaking skills.
