Abstract

This research is about the use of EGRA to improve students‟ grammar mastery. The previous problems are faced by the students in SMAN 1 Papar. The students who have low score in English test are mostly coming from the tenth students. They found difficulties in understanding grammar particularly simple past tense and present perfect tense. The objective of Egra technique is to know the improvement of students‟ grammar mastery in simple past tense and present perfect tense at SMAN 1 Papar. This research was a classroom action research. The subject of this research were tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Papar, consisted of 35 students of class X IIS 5. The instrument of this research was test which formulated in multiple choice and there were 20 items for both pre-test and post test. The research conducted in 1 cycle included plan, action, observation, and reflection. The result of this study showed that there is an improvement of the students‟ grammar mastery. It was stated on the percentages in pre-liminary study or on pre-test was 20% students who got score more than 75. from analysis, the researcher found that the students‟ grammar competence is on an average level with the score was 55.42% then after giving treatment which is EGRA technique, the percentage of the students score achieved was 82,57%. The students who got score more than 75 was 88,5% and the students who got score under 75 was 11,5%. It can be concluded that EGRA technique can improve students‟ grammar mastery at SMAN 1 Papar.
