Abstract

Grammar is one of English components that have to be mastered when learning English. It is rule for forming words and making sentences. There are several kinds of grammar; one of them is simple present tense. Simple present tense is one kind of tenses given to seventh grade student of junior high school in the beginning of learning tenses. But, mostly the students are feeling bored when grammar class begins. It needs alternative media to make the students not boring. Teaching in the classroom using English song as media will help students to improve their ability of simple present tense. The aim of this study is to know the effectiveness of English song in teaching simple present tense for seventh grade students of MTsN 1 Kediri. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of MTsN 1 Kediri academic year 2019/2020. This research conducted a quasi-experimental research. The 29 students of experimental group were taught using English song and 29 students of control group were taught using other type of media, board game. The instrument tests, namely pretest and posttest. The score of them was calculated by using ANCOVA. The experimental group gained 25.17 point from 61.55 to 86.75. While the control group gained 16.72 points from 65.00 to 81.72. First assumption shows that the data of this research were normally distributed (0.200 > 0.05) and (0.200 > 0.05). The levene‟s test also show that the variance of the data is homogeny (0.640 > 0.05). The third assumption shows that there is no interaction between covariate (pretest) and dependent variable 0.362 > 0.05). The last, there is linier relationship between covariate (pretest) and dependent variable (0.000 < 0.05). Finally, the result of ANCOVA shows that the significant value is lower than  (0.001 < 0.05). It indicates that the researcher has enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis. It means English song is effective in teaching grammar (simple present tense) for the seventh grade students of MTsN 1 Kediri.
