Abstract

Writing or producing a text in foreign language such as English, however, is not an easy task. Students clearly had some problems in crafting their written work. Such as, students have a problem in finding ideas quickly, therefore, they will typically begin to write after five or ten minutes after they are being assigned. They will say that they do not know what to write, etc. This study was aimed at finding out whether or not diary writing is effective to teach writing recount text and to get empirical evidence of the effectiveness of diary writing to teach writing recount text at SMK Negeri 1 Ngasem. The research was carried out in a quantitative method. The characteristics material in this study was quasi experimental design by using Non-equivalent Control Class Design as the model experiment. The population of the research totally was 574 students from the total of sixteen classes in the tenth grade. The sample was obtained by using non-random sampling technique with the existing classes or the recommendation from the English teacher at the school resulting in two classes with 36 students in each class. Those classes were then randomly assigned into the experimental and control class by lottery. The experimental class was taught by implementing diary writing method while the control class was taught by implementing picture series method or without implementing the diary writing method. Furthermore, the study was conducted by following the procedure: giving pre-test, implementing the treatment, and giving post-test. The data was collected through tests and online questionnaire. The data of the tests were then calculated by using ANCOVA in SPSS 16 and the data of the online questionnaire was described. The result was done by calculating the score shown the testing assumptions that the data was normal (0.965>0.05), the data was homogeneous (0.300>0.05 for the pre-test and 0.195>0.05 for the post-test), the test between covariate and independent variable was not related (0.923>0.05), and the linier relationship between covariate and dependent variable was related (0.00<0.05). The test of ANCOVA with the significant 0.000 < 0.05 which means that the H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. Moreover, this finding is also in line with the online questionnaire result showing that diary writing is effective particularly in helping students find writing ideas quickly, improving their writing fluency, and building their writing habit.
