Teaching in the classroom using a cooperative learning will help students to improve speaking skill. The aim of this study is to know the effectiveness of three steps interview to improve the speaking skill at SMAN 1 Plosoklaten. The method used in this research was a quantitative method and the research design was quasi experimental research. The population of this study is eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Plosoklaten in the academic year of 2018-2019. The sample of this study, researcher took two classes from the same population that consist of 32 students for the research. The step of three steps interview, teacher will devide the students into groups that consist of four students in every group. Every students have find some information by become to be interviewer and interviewee for two students and after that they have to report the information that they got from the interview to their partner. The result of this study has shown that the data was normally distributed. It was proved by the Kolmogorov-Smornov Test, shows that (0.881) > α (0.05). The Levene’s Test shows that experimental and control group has the same ability. The result is p (0.71) > α (0.05). Then, the homogenity regression shows that p (0.367) > α (0.05). Means there is no interaction between covariate and independent variable. The last assumption is the output of ANCOVA showed that the significant value was p (0.000) < α (0.05). it means that there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and accepted the alternative hypothesis. Based on the findings above, the researcher conclude that three steps interview is an effective teaching strategy to improve the students’ speaking skill.
