Abstract

Learning English should consist of four aspects of skills. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. English is taught in all school in Indonesia. One of them is in SMAN 1 Purwoasri. Reading as a field of teaching is considered as one of the most important skill but also the most difficult skill in learning English. Therefore, the purpose of this study to find out How KWL strategy improves student reading skill of tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Purwoasi. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students consisting of 35 students, 24 female students and 11 male students. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) and conducted in two cycles. The instruments of the research were reading test, the students‘ and researcher‘s observation sheet, and field note. The results of this research showed that the KWL technique is successful in improving the students‘ reading comprehension. It was approved by mean score, students‘ success and observation sheet. The criteria of success include mean score, students‘ success and the students‘ and researcher‘s observation sheet. In pre-test, the mean score of reading test was 44,61 % and the students‘ success got 22,85%. Additionally, in cycle 1 the mean score was 61,00%, and the students‘ success was 48,57%. Meanwhile for the researchers‘ and the students‘ observation in cycle 1 in the first meeting got 76,92% and 53,84%, while in the second meeting got 92,30% and 76,92%. Furthermore, in cycle II the mean score was 81,00%, and the students‘ success was 88,57%. The researcher‘s and the students‘ observation in cycle II in the first meeting got 100% and 92,30%, while in the second meeting both of researcher‘s and the students‘ observation got 100%. It meant that the criteria of minimum score have reached. Thus, it can be concluded that KWL technique was successful to improve students‘ reading comprehension at the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Purwoasri.
