Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness of Cognitive Strategy to improve Reading Comprehension skill. The research question of this study is “Do the students who are taught using Cognitive Strategy have better Reading Comprehension skill than the students who are not taught using Cognitive Strategy?”. In Reading lesson, the students can not comprehend English text well. So, the researcher is interested to conduct a study about the Effectiveness of Cognitive Strategy to improve Reading Comprehension skill of the second graders of MTSN 3 Kota Kediri. The research design of this study is Quasi Experimental Research. The population of this research is second graders of MTSN 3 Kota Kediri. The procedures of the research were pre-test, treatment, and post-test. To collect the data, the researcher used the instrument that were given in pre-test and post-test. To analysis the data, the researcher used ANCOVA and helped by SPSS Application. In this research, the researcher did 4 meetings in both Experimental and Control classes. A meeting for pre-test, 2 meetings for treatment, and a meeting for post-test. On the pre-test result, the Experimental class have 6 questions were Valid and 14 questions were Invalid, the test was reliable (0.6), the level of difficulty was 1 question in Medium level and 19 questions in Easy level, and the discrimating power was 12 questions were Poor and 8 questions were Not Good or Negative. On the post-test, the Experimental class have 2 questions were Valid and 18 questions were Invalid, the test was not reliable (0.427), the level of difficulty was all of questions in Easy level, and the discrimating power was 21 questions were Poor and 4 questions were Not Good or Negative. In the Control class, the pre-test have 12 questions were Valid and 8 questions were Invalid, the test was reliable (0.726), the level of difficulty was 1 question in Difficult level and 19 questions in Easy level, and the discrimating power was 14 questions were Poor and 6 questions were Not Good or Negative. On the post-test, the Control class have 5 questions were Valid and 15 questions were Invalid, the test was reliable (0.642), the level of difficulty was all of questions in Easy level, and the discrimating power was 18 questions were Poor and 2 questions were Not Good or Negative. The students’ Reading Test in the Pre-Test and Post-Test for both Experimental and Control Classes were Normal and Homogeneous.
