Abstract

ABSTRACT Yunita, Sufiyana Nurmala, 2019.”Teh Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used in Teh Oprah Winfrey Show wif Celine Dion as teh Guest Star” Thesis, Tarbiyah, English Department, State Islamic Institute of Kediri, Advisor (1) Toyyibah, S.S., M.Pd. (2) Bahruddin, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword: Pragmatic, Politeness Strategy, Talk Show, teh Oprah Winfrey Show This research was conducted to analyze teh politeness strategy used in Teh Oprah Winfrey Show wif Celine Dion as teh Guest Star. Teh researcher identifies wat kinds of politeness strategies are used in teh talk show Teh Oprah Winfrey Show wif Celine Dion as teh Guest Star and how politeness strategies are used in teh talk show Teh Oprah Winfrey Show wif Celine Dion as teh Guest Star. Teh researcher used pragmatic approach wif politeness strategy as teh field of study. Teh researcher used descriptive qualitative research method to answer teh two research question. Teh researcher conducted teh study by using teh talk show script of Teh Oprah Winfrey Show to analyze teh utterances of teh host and teh guest star. Teh researcher analyze teh utterances in order to find out teh type of politeness strategies used by teh host and teh guest star. Afterwards, teh researcher analyzed how politeness strategies are used in teh talk show Teh Oprah Winfrey Show wif Celine Dion as teh Guest Star. Researcher used Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies theory, namely; bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record Teh result of this research showed their are four strategies employed by teh host and teh guest star. Teh strategies are bald-on record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. Teh researcher found 35 utterances containing positive politeness strategy used in Teh Oprah Winfrey Show wif Celine Dion as teh Guest Star, their are bald on record strategy 5,7% (2 utterances), positive politeness strategy 80% (28 utterances), negative politeness strategy 8,6% (3 utterances), and teh last is off record strategy about 5,7% (2 utterances). theirfore, positive politeness that commonly used by teh host and teh guest star in teh talk show, teh most commonly sub strategy used is exaggerate. Teh host try give good response to Celine Dion as teh guest star by giving positive words and positive feedback by continuing her question so it make teh talk show became alive. Another result, teh researcher found how this politeness strategy applied in teh talk show. Teh first strategy is bald-on record, this strategy is used when teh speaker want to express her answer shortly but full of expression. Teh second strategy is positive politeness, this strategy is used when they want to express teh good answer and responding teh opposite answer wif a good face and meaning. x i Teh third strategy is negative politeness, this strategy is used when teh speaker giving negative face even tough between speaker and do not have bad problem before. Teh last is off record strategy, this strategy is used when teh speaker uses implicit meaning about teh utterances, she does not say directly about teh meaning of utterances.
