Abstract
Teaching vocabulary for EFL young learners always challenges the teacher. It is important to consider students’ needs in providing teaching material or media according to students’ context to ease the learning process. The researcher has investigated the condition of SD islam Pojok 2 Kediri and found that the school only provided modules in the English class, so sometimes teacher need to search more material online to support the teaching and learning process. As the response of the issue, researcher intended to develop a medium to assist teacher and meet students’s need called a big book.This study has two research problems, namely how to develop a bigbook and how is the response of teacher and students towards the books as it aims to improve students’ vocabulary acquisition. This study is research and development. The subject of this research is the fourth graders and an English teacher of SD Islam Pojok 2 Kediri. The procedures of this research is addapted from Dick and Carey and modified by Sugiono into seven steps: need analysis, designing, expert validation, revision I, tryout, revision II and evaluation. The researcher collected the data through observation, interview and document and analysed it using content and narative analysis technique. The results of the study showed that students need an interesting and colorful medium to rise their enthusiasm that affects their vocabulary acquisition positively. There are four topics to assamble the bigbooks into four namely daily activity, jobs, tourism place and food. The expert validation reveals that three bigbooks have been eligible to be used and one books need to revised. In tryout process, it is found out that teacher and students like the story and illustrations of the bigbooks. It helps the students to gain new vocabulary and also strengthen their existing vocabulary. To sum up, the development of big books to improve young learners vocabulary acquisition has been succesful and the study also contributes theoritically and practically in the field of English languange learning.
