Abstract
ABSTRACT Riski, Yunita Ayu, (2024). Correlation among Online Gaming Habit, Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Skill of Junior High School Students. Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Postgraduate Program, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Fathor Rasyid, M.Pd and (II) Burhanudin Syaifulloh, M.Ed. Ph.D. Keywords: Correlation, Listening Skill, Online Gaming Habit, Vocabulary Mastery Listening is the first language skill humans acquire. It is important for effective communication and comprehension, allowing individuals to understand spoken language and respond appropriately. Good listening skills sometimes linked to a habit and vocabulary acquisition. The objective of this study is to know the correlation among online gaming habit, vocabulary mastery and listening skill at the eighth grade students of MTs Miftahul Afkar in academic year 2024/2025. This research is a quantitative correlational study. The population were 200 students from all the grades at MTs Miftahul Afkar. Then the researcher took 40% or 80 students from eighth grade as samples. Questionnaires and tests are used as the instruments of this research. The researcher took online data by google form. First of all, online gaming habit questionnaires were distributed to the students. The aim of this test is to know the students’ online gaming habit score. Second, vocabulary tests were conducted to measure students’ vocabulary mastery. The last, listening tests were conducted to measure students’ listening skill. To analyze the data, the researcher tested validity, reliability, linearity, and conducted hypothesis testing. The researcher analyzed the correlation all of the variables used Pearson Correlation and multiple correlation. Based on the results obtained from all hypotheses, it reflects a strong correlation among variables. The first hypothesis is about the correlation between online gaming habit (X1) and listening skill (Y). The result shows that the r-value is 0.815, it means that the correlation between online gaming habit and listening skill was on very strong correlation. Next, the researcher analyze the second hypothesis about correlation between vocabulary mastery (X2) and listening skill (Y). The result shows that the r-value is 0.905, it means that the correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening skill was on very strong correlation. Last, the researcher analyze correlation among online gaming habit (X1), vocabulary mastery(X2), and listening skill (Y). The result shows that the Sig. F Change was 0.000 with r 0.908 indicates a very strong value of the correlation coefficient. It can concluded that is there significant correlation among online gaming habit, vocabulary mastery, and listening skill.
