Abstract
The aim of this research was to find out whether the students who are taught by using picture series have better achievement than those who are not taught by using picture series. In order to reach the objective of the study, the researcher designs a quasi-experimental research. The population of this study is the second year students of MTsN 2 Kota Kediri, class Eight A and Eight B. Eight A as experimental group that is taught by using picture series, and Eight B as control group that is taught without using picture series. Each class consists of about 32 students. Then calculate the result of the test using ANCOVA. The inter-rater correlation between researcher and teacher is high. The result of this study showed that the data in the research is normal. It showed that the significant value p (0.108) > α (0.05) for pre-test and p (0.074) > 0.05. In the pre-test, the mean score of experimental group is 62.13 and the mean score of the control group is 65.88. Meanwhile, in the post-test, the mean score of experimental is 75.25 and the mean score of control group is 69.12. Then, the result of the output ANCOVA showed the significant value was p (0.008) < α (0.05). To know the picture series is effective, there must be a significant relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable (p < 0.05). Because of the significant value is lower than 0.05, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Based on the finding, the researcher concluded that teaching speaking using picture series strategy is effective.
