Abstract

Reading is the most complex skill in learning English, containing important factors for learners, especially high school learners who are trying to acquire English as a Foreign Language. According to Grabe & Stoller, reading skills in EFL learners are multifaceted abilities that involve multiple steps of cognitive processing. The importance of skills is not just reading words by word, but they are required to understand deeply and think critically with text content. These skill purpose learners to analyze, synthesize, and interpret complex information, there by transcending the limitations of basic language proficiency This study is aimed at determining the correlation among reading habits, critical thinking, and reading comprehension among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The researcher used quantitative research with correlation design to find the correlation among variables. There were 180 students of EFL learners. There were 180 students of EFL learners as the participants. There were three instruments utilized to collect the data. The first was reading habits questionnaire that adapted from Goana Gonzales. The second was critical thinking questionnaire that adapted from Peter Facione. The last was a test to obtain the score of students’ comprehension. The results indicate a strong positive correlation between reading habits and reading comprehension, with a Pearson correlation value of 0.670, as well as a very strong correlation between critical thinking and reading comprehension, with a Pearson correlation value of 0.847. Additionally, there is a moderate correlation between reading habits and critical thinking, with a Pearson correlation value of 0.597. Combined analysis shows that reading habits and critical thinking together significantly influence students' reading comprehension by 75.9% (R Square value = 0.759). As a result, it can be concluded that students should be aware of their reading habits and strive to enhance their critical thinking skills, as both significantly impact their reading comprehension. By focusing on improving these areas, students can achieve better academic outcomes, particularly in comprehending and analyzing complex texts.
