Abstract

Speaking, a productive skill, must be honed continuously to get maximum results by students. EFL students faced problems when learning speaking which is not their native language. The existence of media supporting and boosting students to practice speaking is needed, such as ClassDojo learning application. With an interactive application like ClassDojo, students can develop their speaking skills by using their own learning style (VAK). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of ClassDojo on teaching speaking for students with different learning styles. Quasi-experimental research was conducted in this study. There were 18 students in the experimental group and 18 students in the control group from English Master (EM) 123 A and English Master Plus (EMP) 53 A at Language Center. The instruments used in this study were speaking test and a learning style questionnaire. Since this study was non-parametric, the researcher used Mann-Whitney U test. The results explored that ClassDojo was more effective for teaching speaking because the experimental group performed better than the control group (0.000 < 0.05). The mean scores also showed that the experimental group got higher than the control group (83.28 > 72.97). For the learning styles, the data were generated from the calculation of the N-Gain score in each learning style in both groups. The use of ClassDojo was effective on teaching speaking for students having visual learning styles (visual = 48.3174; auditory = 37.0849; kinesthetic = 50.0894). Thus, the use of ClassDojo is beneficial to the development of students' speaking skills.
