Abstract

One of psychological factors in learning English is anxiety in speaking. Anxiety often appears in learning a foreign language because most learners consider it difficult. The anxiety is including fear, apprehension, shyness, anger, worry and confidence. The purpose of this study is to describe the problem faced by the students that makes them anxious and how they overcome their anxiety. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design with questionnaire to gain the data. The questionnaire consists of 1 open question and 35 ended question. The population of this research is the students of sixth semester students of Department of English Language Education. Samples are one of classes from sixth semester that consists of 33 students. After giving a questionnaire, the researcher then analyzes the data using SPSS 26.0 The result of this research showed that the causes of anxiety are lack of vocabulary, grammar error, not fluent, and feels other students’ better than themselves. The researcher concludes that to overcome the anxiety, the students also need instructor’s role and motivation, more practice, and note taking to help them to memorize. By having those things, the students will feel enjoyable and not pressured which will lead them away from anxiety.
