Abstract

To teach speaking, the teacher cannot teach using one method. Because using one method can make the students lazy to practice speaking. Here, the contents of the thesis is about a using video method to improve speaking skill of the students and the researcher believe that this method can improve speaking skill. After that, the object of the study is to know the implementations of using video to improve the English speaking skill of the first grade students of SMPN I Kras Kediri. The researcher used class room action research to observe the students. The population of the study is the first grade of students of SMPN 1 Kras Kediri. The researcher takes one class and class contains 35 students. The research procedure is started by preliminary study, which was followed by cycle comprising a numbers of steps. Those are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, the researcher used observation checklist and test. The research findings shows the using video could improve the students’ speaking skill. It can be seen that after the researcher makes test to all students of class B. The analysis of this study shows that there was an improvement from students’ ability. It can be seen from the different mean in the preliminary study and the result of cycle. It means that this method can improve students’ speaking skill. In preliminary study, it based on students’ mean speaking test score from 51.54 in the preliminary study, and from this rater 1 of cycle 1 was 65.71428, from the rater 2 of cycle 1 was 66.1714485, score from cycle 2 is 75.42856 from rater I and from rater II 75.88572 and score from cycle 3 is 76.3242 from rater I and rater II gets score 76.5632. Based on the result of the study, the researcher conclude that using video could improve the English speaking skill of the first grade students of SMPN I Kras Kediri. It is suggested that English teacher implement this method as an alternative strategy in teaching speaking subject.
