Abstract

Year by year, internet users increase including English department students. Since the significant number of internet users in the world increase, English department students should be aware about the latest update of technologies in the world. This study aimed to know the perceptions of English department students of STAIN Kediri on the use of internet for doing course assignments and their time spent for academic and non-academic purposes. The subject of this study is 100 English department students from sixth semester. The researcher used questionnaire adapted from Shin & Son’s questionnaire to elicit the English department students’ perception on the internet use in doing course assignments and time spent in using internet for academic and non-academic purposes. The data were analyzed in relation to the content of the questionnaire. The result of this study reveals that most students have positive perceptions and good responses through the use of internet in academic and non-academic purposes. They perceived that internet facilitated them with all types of information in the world. Most students stated that internet is easy to access, and information from internet is varied and up to date. Although, they also stated that they may do plagiarism and become addicted in using internet because of this easy way to find out all types of information. They also claimed that sometimes they find unreliable information. Most students reported that they spend 3 times a week in using internet for doing their assignments. They also spend 5 to 10 hours in a day for non-academic purposes such as online gaming, online shopping, chatting, and others. The results of the study are expected to be useful study for the students also to be the high-grade reference for the next researchers.
