Abstract

Code-switching is commonly viewed with suspicion in EFL classroom. It is found that teachers’ code-switching between Foreign Language (FL) and Mother Tongue (MT) is a common phenomenon in FL classes at university levels. This topic is very important because some social stigmas have been attributed to this mode of communication. Therefore, this study focused on English Morphology course. It is the study of words. It concerns how they are formed and it has many terms. In addition, word or sentence is a tool to share what people think or feel. So that, the researcher interests to take this subject. The aim of the research was to find the students’ perception on English lecturer’s code switching in English Morphology class. This research employs a quantitative approach and conducted a survey among English students of fourth semesters of STAIN Kediri. The study investigated one hundred students and use two-stage random sampling to determine the samples. A set of questionnaire containing 20 items utilizing 4-points Likert-type scale was developed and distributed to the students. The data from the questionnaire were tabulated, frequencies, percentages and mean conducted by SPSS program. The results of this study are the students have positive attitude to lecturer’s code switching in English Morphology class. They have positive view to lecturer’s personality. The result also displays that students choose to give their perception on high level of agreement with the range 3,03 up to 3.16 for its mean in relation to subject access. For classroom management and interpersonal relations, students tend to give medium level of agreement. Based on the result, the researcher hopes that language learners to be aware of the role of using code switching in their process of language learning. By being aware of the attitudes of the students about using code switching, the lecturer may manage its use in their productions. Besides, the result of this study can help the lecturer to manage its usage to enhance and maximize the process of language learning.
