Abstract

Reading comprehension is a complex interaction among automatic and strategic cognitive processes that enables the reader to create a mental representation of the text. Comprehension requires effective use of strategic processes, such as metacognition and comprehension monitoring. A portfolio as a constructivist strategy enhances the learners’ transferable skills so that the learners can use the skills such as reflection, critical thinking and assessment more professionally in the real-life situation. The research question of this study is “Is there any significant difference between the impact of paper testing method and portfolio assessment on EFL learners' reading comprehension skill?”. The objective of the research is to find out the impact of portfolio assessment on reading skill. The population of this study is the second grade of science students of SMAN 6 Kediri in academic year 2016-2017. The research method is quasiexperimental research, which conducted in two classes which XI IPA 5 as experimental group and XI IPA 3 as control group. Each class consist of 31 students where XI IPA 5 as experimental group is assessed by portfolio assessment. The data are gathered through two test there are pre-test and post-test. Then, all the data is analyzed using quantitative approach which used some formulas to find out the normality, homogeneity variances, homogeneity of regression, and a linier relationship between covariate and dependent variable. From the data analysis that using ANCOVA, the result of the group significant is 0.000 which is lower than 0.050 (0.000>0.050) it can be concluded that this study has enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis that there are different outcomes among students assessed by using portfolio assessment and assessed by using paper testing method. Then, the result of post-test in experimental group is higher than control group. The researcher found the average score for experimental group was 18.45 (pre-test) and 21.45 (post-test) whereas the average score for control group was 17.90 (pre-test) and 19.32 (post-tes). It means that the portfolio assessment is effective.
