Abstract

This study is conducted to know the student’s perceptions on using WhatsApp to support learning process at English Department of STAIN Kediri. The objective of the study is to know the student’s perceptions on using WhatsApp to support learning process, and the advantages and disadvantges of it. The subject of this study is focused on the sixth semester students of English Department of STAIN Kediri in academic year 2017. There are 5 classes in sixth semester. It consists of 150 students. The researcher takes 100 of them to be the respondents of this study. The research design of this study is survey research. To do this research, the researcher uses some instruments; those are a questionnaire as the main instrument and an interview guide as the secondary instrument. The researcher distributed questionnaire to get the data, and the researcher interviewed some respondents to get deeper answer, then the rearcher described the finding in simple percentage. The result of this study shows that the most students responded positively to WhatsApp as a convenient platform for discussion on school-related matters, but WhatsApp chats chat can not effective to improve students understanding about a subject. WhatsApp group chat can help students to improve their relationship with friends, schoolmates, and teachers. The most students agreed WhatsApp group chat encourages students to participate more in discussions online as opposed to being in a classroom. The using WhatsApp to support learning process has technical advantages and academic advantages. The students can send what file they want to increase their knowledge and they can make WhatsApp group chats in order to make them easy to sharing and discuss a subject beyond class hours. The using WhatsApp to support learning process has disadvantages; those are their learning can not be maximal because they did not meet someone who was learning with them. The discussion using WhatsApp group can not focus on a subjects, the discussion sometimes talking about unrelated matters.
