Abstract

Translation is neglected in second or foreign language classrooms because it is considered an inadequate reminder of old teaching methodologies. The students in schools should be taught about the translation because translation can be used by the students as a way to improve their English skill. The present research investigates the quality of students’ translation in translating descriptive text, the translation procedures and translation method that are applied by the students of MAN 5 Kediri. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of the study are 22 students of class X MIA-1 in MAN 5 Kediri. The data is obtained from the students’ writing in translating descriptive text. The instruments are documents, those are two descriptive texts titled Taj Mahal and Cuban Rondo. The data is collected through two translation tests. The data is analyzed using Nababan’s scale of Translation Quality Assessment and Rachmadie’s theory of translation procedures. The results shows that the quality of students’ translation is less accurate but it is acceptable. It can be shown from the average score that is found 2 in accuracy and 3 in acceptability criteria. It is found that 41% sentences are accurate, 24% sentences are less accurate and 35% sentences are inaccurate. On the other hand, the acceptability percentage in Taj Mahal shows that 64% sentences are acceptable, 30% sentences are less acceptable and 6% sentences are unacceptable. While in Cuban Rondo, the result shows that 44% sentences are accurate, 26% sentences are less accurate and 30% sentences are inaccurate. On the other hand, the acceptability percentage shows that 83% sentences are acceptable, 8% sentences are less acceptable and 9% sentences are unacceptable. All the students use only literal procedure to translate the descriptive texts. In line with the translation procedure, both descriptive texts, Taj Mahal and Cuban Rondo, are translated by the students using literal method.
