Abstract

One of the hardest skill in English is writing. So the teacher should make the students motivated and enjoyable in learning and use interesting teaching method. Afterwards, the researcher tried to use mind mapping technique as a technique to solve the problem and identify the students‟ ability in writing especially on recount text. Mind mapping technique is used in the prewriting activity to help the students to raise, develop and organize ideas to write a text. It can make the students so enthusiastic in the teaching and learning process using a mind mapping technique. This research study was aimed to measure the effectiveness of mind mapping technique in improving students‟ writing skill at SMAN 1 Purwoasri. This research method was quasi-experimetal research which conducted two classes. The population of the research was the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Purwoasri. The subjects of this research are X-MIA 3 as the experimental group and X-MIA 4 as the control group in teaching recount text. Each class consist of 34 students. The data gathered through by two test; pre-test and post-test. Then all the data analyzed using quantitative approach which used some formula to find out descriptive analysis, normality test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis test. The researcher found that the average score for control group was 59.09 (pre-test) and 59.62 (post test). The average score for experimental group was 67.18 (pre-test) and 73.29 (post test). From the data analysis using ANCOVA, the result of significant value is (smaller) 0.003 than 0.05. It means that Hα was accepted while Hο was rejected. It can be concluded that the mind mapping technique was effective.
