Abstract

Language is used for communicating with others in the world. It is needed to understand the contexts and speaker’s purpose or feeling. Pragmatics studies language use. It is one of the study in language contexts and speaker’s purpose. It means, pragmatics is used to influence or to entertain the listeners or receivers to understand the contexts, purpose, to express idea, etc. One aspect of language studies of pragmatic is deixis. Therefore, this research is aimed to know the types of personal deixis, positions in the sentences which are occupied by personal deixis, and kind of references that are used by the personal deixis in the Henry Rider Haggard’s Novel of King Solomon’s Mines. To know the relationship between them, the researcher uses pragmatic theory. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the research design because the data are in the form of words or sentences from the Novel of King Solomon’s Mines by Henry Rider Haggard. The researcher showed types of personal deixis which have position in the sentence. Then, she analyzed the types of personal deixis to get reference. The result of this research is there are three types of personal deixis including the first person, second person, and third person. Then some of positions in the sentences include subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, and object complement. The last is the kind of references in personal deixis include anaphora, cataphora, and exophora. The researcher conludes that the author has his own way in presenting the idea. Based on the results of the research, the researcher suggests the readers to give more attention to use reference, especially on references that are used in personal deixis.
