Abstract

In learning English, there are four skills need to mastered by students, there are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Writing as one of the productive skills is required by the learners to communicate in written form. A teacher needs the implementation of interesting and effective technique, media, or strategies. One of the techniques in teaching writing is Dictogloss technique. In this study, the reseacher taught Dictogloss technique. The aim of this study was to find out the empirical evidence about the effectiveness of using dictogloss technique in teaching writing narrative text for the eighth grade students at MTsN 6 Kediri. The method of this study was quantitative method. This study used quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test. The population of this study were 60 eight-grade students of MTsN 6 Kediri in 2019/2020 academic year. The researcher took two classes as the samples of this study, class VIII A as experimental class, was taught by dictogloss technique, and VIIIF as controlled class, was taught using mind mapping. The researcher gave pre-tests to both classes before giving treatment and gave post-tests after giving treatment. The instrument used in this study was writing test. To score the students’ writing, the writer adapted analytic scoring rubric developed by Jacobs et al. The data obtained from pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using ANCOVA. The result of this research showed that distribution of the data in dependent variable is normal. Then the Lavene’s test result showed 0.061 >0.05, homogeneity regression showed 0.531 and result of linier relationship between covariate and dependent variable is 0.010. The result of the hypothesis test, the significant value of two tailed was 0.010 <0.05. Because the significant value is smaller than 0.05. It means that there is significant H0 is rejected and HI is accepted. Therefore, it can be conclude that teaching writing using dictogloss technique is effective.
