Abstract

This study aimed to find out the kinds of figurative language in Taylor Swift‟s Lover and the meaning of the figurative language that contrasted with its lexical meaning. Figurative language is language which employs various figure of speech. Figurative language in the song could make the readers or listeners understand that the lyrics of the song can describe messages that must be known by learning deeply in terms of categories. This study is done based on the theory of figurative language by X. J. Kennedy. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from 18 Taylor Swift‟s songs on the album Lover. The writer used the study document to collect the data. The researcher analyzed the data based on the types of figurative language. In this study, the researcher as the instrument has to validate to what extent qualitative researchers are ready to engage in research that will go into the study. To check the data or in other words used to make the data valid, the writer used investigator triangulation. From the analysis, the writer finds that figurative language that used in Taylor Swift‟s songs on the album Lover is very diverse. There are 31 data that have found, 4 data of personification, 5 data of simile, 3 data of metaphor, 1 data of hyperbole, 1 data of irony, 5 data of metonymy, 1 data of synecdoche, 10 data of symbolism, and 1 data of allusion. It can be concluded that figurative language that most used in Taylor Swift‟s songs on the album Lover is symbolism. The meaning of figurative language and its lexical meaning are contrasted. Which is the meaning of the figurative language are much deeper and more impressing than the lexical meaning.
