Abstract

This study is aimed at identifying the utterances of particularized conversational implicature and describing its implied meanings. Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI) is a kind of conversational implicature that requires specific context to calculate the additional conveyed meaning. PCI appeared as the results of flouting Grice‟s maxim. The data were analyzed descriptively by using Grice‟s maxim theory about PCI. The data were collected by searching the selected narrative texts contained the conversation in the section of short stories available on British council‟s web (www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglishkids), selecting the narrative texts included into particularized conversational implicature, and downloading the narrative texts that are relevant to this study. The results showed that twenty four utterances of PCI were found in seventeen selected narrative texts on British council‟s web. Those utterances flouted fourteen maxims of relevance (58%), eight maxims of manner (33%), and two maxims of quantity (9%). The maxim of relevance mostly appeared in the conversation because the speakers provided irrelevant information to the listeners obviously. It showed that when the characters in selected narrative texts on British council‟web flouted the conversational maxims, they did not intend to break the conversation. In fact, they wanted other characters to be aware of their implied meanings.
